What is active honey?

Active honey is honey that retains all its natural enzymes and nutrients. This type of honey is known for its antibacterial and antioxidant properties, making it a popular choice in natural remedies and skin care products. Active honey is also considered to have a lower glycaemic index than processed honey, making it a better option for those with diabetes or those watching their sugar intake.

Do you pasteurise your honey?

Pasteurised honey is the process of heating the honey to very high temperatures (over 80 degrees Celsius) which has the effect of breaking down the sugar molecules in the honey, making it more liquid and efficient to bottle and extending the shelf life by preventing crystallisation.

However, the heat also has the effect of reducing the amount of the antioxidants, vitamins and enzymes which give the honey its unique flavour and health benefits. Studies have indicated that unpasteurised honey has more than four times the number of antioxidants when compared with the pasteurised process.

Wisdom Choice’s honey goes through a cold extraction process, which heats the honey at a lower temperature to retain the natural taste and benefits of the honey. It takes more time, but the outcome is delicious and healthy honey!

How do I best store my honey?

To best store honey, it is important to keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Exposure to heat and light can cause honey to crystallise and lose its flavour and nutrients. It is recommended to keep honey in a tightly sealed container to prevent air moisture from affecting its quality. Glass jars or plastic containers with tight-fitting lids are good options for storing honey. Additionally, it is important to avoid using metal containers, as the acidity of honey can react with the metal and alter its taste. When stored correctly, honey can maintain its quality for a long time, making it a sweet and healthy addition to your pantry.

 

Does honey expire or go off?

Honey has a very long shelf life, and it is rare for it to expire or go off. Honey is made mostly of sugar, which naturally inhibits the growth of microorganisms that cause food to go bad. Additionally, bees add an enzyme to honey that produces hydrogen peroxide, which helps to preserve it even further. Properly stored honey can last for years or even decades without spoiling. However, honey may crystallize or become cloudy over time, but this is a natural process and does not indicate that it has gone bad. If this happens, simply warm the honey in a hot water bath to return it to its liquid state.

Where does your honey come from?

We have longstanding relationships with our beekeepers across Australia which gives us the ability to ensure that we maintain a steady supply of a wide range of honeys. Most of our honey is sourced from Victoria but there are some honey varieties i.e. Jarrah Honey which only come specifically from a certain part of Western Australia.

Can I feed honey to my child?

It is recommended that babies younger than 1 year old should not be given honey. This is because a type of bacteria, called clostridium, can be found in honey which can cause infant botulism. While rare, it is a potentially fatal illness.

Babies under 12 months of age are most at risk to this due to their underdeveloped digestive system. Therefore, it is best to wait until after the child’s first birthday to introduce honey when it is considered by most health experts as safe.

How long will it take from my order to be delivered?

It can take between 2-4 business days to process your order. Once shipped, depending on where the parcel is being delivered, can take between 2-5 business days. Most parcels being delivered in metropolitan areas will usually arrive within 1-2 days from being dispatched.

Can I take honey overseas as a gift?

Yes, Honey makes a perfect gift and can be packed and stored easily for travel and is a wonderful way to represent Australia’s diverse food offerings.

Australian honey is classified as a “non-prescribed good” under Australian export control legislation which means that there are no restrictions to its export. There are some countries with very strict biosecurity laws regarding honey, so it is usually best to check with your destination country of travel to see if there are any specific rules or laws regarding the import of honey or bee products.
